Which types of ammunition are no longer sold at Walmart?

Walmart made significant changes to its ammunition sales policies in recent years, especially following a series of high-profile mass shootings. Here’s a summary of the types of ammunition that are no longer sold at Walmart:

Ammunition No Longer Sold at Walmart:

  1. Handgun Ammunition:

In 2019, Walmart stopped selling all handgun ammunition. This includes calibers typically used in handguns such as 9mm, .45 ACP, .40 S&W, and others.
  2. Short-Barrel Rifle Ammunition:

Walmart also discontinued sales of ammunition used in military-style rifles, such as .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO. These rounds are commonly associated with AR-15-style rifles.

Ammunition Still Sold at Walmart:

While Walmart has phased out sales of certain types of ammunition, the company continues to sell the following:

  • Shotgun Ammunition: Walmart continues to offer ammunition for hunting shotguns, including shells for 12 gauge, 20 gauge, and other shotgun sizes.
  • Hunting Rifle Ammunition: Ammunition for long guns typically used in hunting, such as .308 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, and other common hunting calibers, is still available.

Additional Policy Changes:

  • Firearms: Walmart no longer sells handguns (except in Alaska, where they stopped selling them in 2019). The company does still sell long guns such as shotguns and rifles, but primarily those used for hunting or sporting purposes.
  • Age Restrictions: Walmart raised the minimum age for purchasing firearms and ammunition to 21 years old.

These changes reflect Walmart's efforts to reduce its involvement in the sale of ammunition commonly used in incidents of gun violence, while still supporting hunters and sports shooters.

What is Walmart doing to guarantee responsible firearm sales?

We understand the responsibility that comes with our deeply rooted place in America and our influence as the world’s largest retailer. We care deeply about the responsible sale and regulation of firearms, and we know this is also an important issue to our customers.

In 2018, we made the decision to raise the minimum age to purchase firearms and ammunition in our stores to 21 years of age. In years prior, we ended sales of modern sporting rifles, including the AR-15. Most recently, in September 2019, we decided to no longer sell the ammunition that can be used in large capacity magazines on military-style weapons, which we do not sell. We also made a complete exit from handgun sales. We will focus our assortment of ammunition on the firearms we do carry.

Additionally, we require that customers pass a background check, despite federal law allowing firearms to be sold after a three-day waiting period even if approval isn’t received. We also videotape the point of sale for firearms and only allow certain trained associate to sell firearms.
