Cleaning with clay, often referred to as "claying," is an effective method to remove contaminants from your car's paint surface. Here’s how to do it:
1. Gather Your Materials
- Clay Bar: Purchase a quality clay bar from an auto detailing supply store.
- Lubricant: Use a dedicated clay lubricant or a mixture of car wash soap and water in a spray bottle.
- Microfiber Towels: For drying and buffing the surface afterward.
2. Wash the Car
- Start with a thorough wash using a car wash soap to remove dirt and grime. Rinse and dry the car completely.
3. Prepare the Clay
- If the clay bar is new, knead it in your hands to soften it. If it’s used, inspect it for dirt and debris; if it’s too dirty, discard it.
4. Apply Lubricant
- Spray a section of the car's surface with the lubricant. This will help the clay glide over the paint without scratching it.
5. Use the Clay Bar
- Gently rub the clay bar over the lubricated area in a back-and-forth motion. You should feel the clay picking up contaminants. If it starts to feel rough, reapply lubricant.
6. Check Your Progress
- Periodically wipe the area with a microfiber towel to check for smoothness. Continue until the surface feels smooth to the touch.
7. Repeat
- Move to the next section of the car and repeat the process until the entire vehicle is done.
8. Clean Up
- After claying, wash the car again to remove any residue from the lubricant and clay. Dry the car thoroughly.
9. Protect the Surface
- After claying, consider applying a wax, sealant, or ceramic coating to protect the now-smooth paint.
Tips:
- Always work in the shade to prevent the lubricant from drying too quickly.
- Use a clean section of the clay bar frequently by folding it to expose a new side.
- If the clay drops on the ground, discard it to avoid dirt and debris from scratching the paint.
Claying can greatly enhance the smoothness and appearance of your car's paint, making it a valuable step in the detailing process!
